The Institute
The origin of Instituto de Radiologia - Dr. Pinto Leite dates back to Dr. A. Pinto Leite (“son"), who obtained his specialty training in Berlin and changed his radiology office in 1944 from the Casa de Saúde on Avenida dos Aliados to its current facilities.
Instituto de Radiologia - Dr. Pinto Leite was given this name by Dr. Adolfo Pinto Leite and Dr. Carlos Pinto Leite to honour their father, Dr. A. Pinto Leite (“son”) and their grandfather Dr. A. Pinto Leite (“father”) and it has always been at the forefront of radiology.
In the period of conventional radiology, it was the first radiology office in Porto to perform hysterosalpingographies, retropneumoperitoneum, myelography, phlebographies, arthrographies, xeroradiographies, macroradiographies, etc. In the 70s, Dr. Adolfo Pinto Leite, who obtained his specialty training in radiology from the University of Paris and, as a visiting professor, was in charge of teaching radiology at the University of Porto, School of Medicine, and introduced a “new” technique of double contrast in stomach and colon x-rays in Portugal. He led a group of physicians who installed the first full-body CT device in Portugal. Dr. Carlos Pinto Leite was the first radiologist in Portugal to perform abdominal ultrasounds.
Instituto de Radiologia - Dr. Pinto Leite is governed by high standards of quality and rigour and has a team of highly qualified technicians, six of whom with a University degree (which means an extra year of study) and a team of physicians with internships abroad, the majority in the United States. In accordance with these requirements, Instituto de Radiologia Dr. Pinto Leite implemented the method of double reading many years ago, having been the first ever in Portugal to do so. The majority of exams are interpreted by two radiologists at different times. In order to ensure their physician’s training and keep them up-to-date, the Institute has established an agreement with the University of Southern California Hospitals (San Diego), the first and only one in Portugal to do so, and the more complex exams, which require a second opinion, are immediately sent to the United States to be discussed among the super-specialists who work at that University’s Hospitals. The Institute does not charge the customers, or the systems with which it works, extra costs for this service that mainly benefits the customer. Instituto de Radiologia - Dr. Pinto Leite was the first, in Portugal, to install an integrated system that connects all the diagnosis rooms to the workstations in the radiologists’ offices (PACS - Picture Archiving and Communication System). Similarly, as a General Radiology office it was the first in Portugal to have its Quality Management System certified in accordance with the NP EN ISO 9001:2000 standard. With the aim of strengthening its position in the imaging area in Portugal, within a highly competitive market, Instituto de Radiologia Dr. Pinto Leite has recently expanded its activities and now has the ability to perform almost every complementary diagnostic test.
On the 31st of July, 2007 the Trofa Saúde Group acquired an important holding of Instituto de Radiologia Dr. Pinto Leite‘s share capital and, together with the radiologist Dr. Nuno Pinto Leite (the grandson of the founder), took over the management of the Institute. The possibility of a joint management with all the inherent advantages, and the fact that both institutions seek the quality of the service provided and the total satisfaction of the customers facilitated this partnership. The growth and ambition of the Trofa Saúde Group combined with the strong team spirit and dedication of the Instituto de Radiologia Dr. Pinto Leite’s employees, will undoubtedly contribute to the success of this new joint management and allow the Institute to progressively become a reference in Radiology in Portugal, as well as strengthen its position in the constant search for new technologies that allow for a better response to its customers and referring physicians.
Instituto de Radiologia - Dr. Pinto Leite has been in charge of the Radiology Department of Hospital da Prelada since 1995 and, as a result of its long experience in service provision in Radiology in the hospital context, it took over the management of the Radiology Service of the refurbished Hospital de Santa Maria, in January 2008. It is currently getting ready to organise and manage the Radiology Service of the future Hospital Privado da Boa Nova, which is the next Hospital Unit of the Trofa Saúde Group to be opened. This service will be equipped with all the cutting-edge technology available in the market. Other challenges are certain to follow and the Institute shall respond to them with the same ambition and competence... ![]() Trofa Saúde GroupQuick access to all Trofa Saúde Units ![]() ![]()
